A Changing Time
Since the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement, the civil rights and lives of gay and lesbian individuals as well as other queer individuals has greatly changed. Although the movement took a severe blow with the aids epidemic in the 90’s, the movement, as well as other social movements, paved the way for several milestone court rulings that have given the queer community the rights and opportunities that they are able to have in the modern United States.

Milestones court rulings
Under the court ruling of Lawrence v Texas in 2003 and Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, as well as many other milestone court ruling, the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community has greatly increased. Under the Lawrence b Texas ruling, the prohibition of sexual acts between consenting adults was made illegal. This court ruling caused many sodomy laws throughout the country to become unlawful under the United States Consitiution. As a result of the Obergefell v Hodges court ruling, marriage between same-sex couples was recognized as a fundamental right under the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. This was a ground-breaking ruling as it forced all states to accept and recognize same-sex marriages in all states of the United States. Before this ruling, only 36 US states recognized and permitted same-sex couples to marry (bu.edu). The legalization of gay marriage was a huge milestone and showed the success of the Gay Rights Movement and has paved the way for the accomplishment of future civil rights successes for LGBTQ+ people.

Despite the groundbreaking accomplishments that the Gay Rights Movements and other movements lead to, many civil rights are will restricted from sexual minorities. Despite the fight against it, transgender people are not allowed to openly serve in the military. Although this right was previously achieved, during the Trump presidency, thelaw. Under the Trump-Pence military ban, the transgender people serving in the military were not immediately discharged, but transgender people can no longer join the military or transition while in service (hrc.org).
