Overview

In 1967, the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, was raided by police in New York City, NY. People were arrested and shoved into as as neighbors through objects at the police. Followed by a three day series of riots, the event is often regarded as the spark that began the gay rights movement, a social movement asking for equal rights for LGBTQ individuals and an end to sodomy laws. Taking place throughout the 1960’s, the Gay Rights Movement worked to give LGBTQ+ people the rights they have now. Resulting in the 2003 and 2015 supreme court rulings, the movement succeeded in eliminating sodomy laws, the legalization of same-sex marriage, the adoption by same-sex couples, the ability to be served alcohol, to participate in the military, and many other previously restricted rights.
